1. Start with Clean, Freshly Washed Hair
Begin by thoroughly cleansing your hair to remove any product buildup, which can make curls look limp. Shampoo and condition your hair, then apply a light leave-in conditioner to add moisture and detangle. This will give your curls a healthy base and prevent knots or tangles.
2. Detangle and Section Your Hair
Divide your hair into 4-6 sections, depending on its length and thickness, to make detangling easier. Detangle from the ends of each section, working your way up. Avoid starting from the roots to reduce breakage, especially if your hair is long.
3. Apply Foaming Mousse
Apply one to two pumps of foaming mousse to each section of hair, starting light and adding more only if needed. Over-applying mousse can make hair revert to its natural state, especially with tight curl patterns. For extra hold, apply a small amount of gel to the ends or wrap the ends with setting papers for a sleek, defined finish.
4. Wrap Hair Around the Flexi Rods
Starting at the ends, wrap your hair around the flexi rods in a windmill motion, twisting the hair and rod together to create a spiral curl. Position the rods in the direction you want the curls to fall—toward or away from your face. Wrap tightly and get close to the roots for a secure hold, then bend the ends of the rod together to prevent slipping.
5. Dry Your Hair with a Hooded Dryer or Air-Dry Overnight
Once all sections are wrapped, choose between a heat-free or heat-based drying method. For a heat-free option, leave the rods in overnight. Alternatively, sit under a hooded dryer for at least 30 minutes. Since the heat from the hooded dryer is indirect, it minimizes damage to natural hair.
6. Remove the Flexi Rods and Style
